Microsoft is reportedly set to end iOS support for its predictive keyboard app Swiftkey, with the discontinuation expected to take effect from October 5, according to a recent report by ZDNet. Chris Wolfe, the Director of Product Management at Swiftkey, mentioned in a statement that the app will be removed from Apple’s App Store. However, existing users who have Swiftkey installed on their devices can continue using the app unless they switch to a different device or upgrade to a newer operating system.
Notably, the iOS version of Swiftkey has not received updates for over a year. Several months ago, a Reddit thread gained attention when a user expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of updates to the Swiftkey iOS app.
When questioned about the decision to discontinue the iOS version, Chris Wolfe chose not to provide specific details but indicated that the company is concentrating on enhancing the Android version of the app.
For context, Microsoft acquired Swiftkey during its acquisition spree in 2016, claiming that the keyboard was installed on over 300 million devices at that time. In 2012, Swiftkey also held the distinction of being the best-selling app on Google’s Play Store.
